Module Descriptions

Formative Instructional Practices Reaching English Language Learners (2 hours) 

This module deepens teachers' understanding of how to best meet the needs of English language learners by using formative instructional practices to maximize their achievement. This module is intended for classroom teachers interested in improving instruction for their English language learners, as well as for ELL teachers who may be beginning their FIP journey. It is meant to be used as a companion to the Foundations of Formative Instructional Practices and FIP in Action modules. This module is organized by the four core components of FIP (clear learning targets, collecting and documenting evidence of student learning, analyzing evidence and providing effective feedback, and student ownership of learning). Each segment describes the component's effective use with students who are acquiring a new language while also meeting academic learning expectations in that language.

Learning targets:
1. Know how to identify the learning needs of English language learners.
2. Know how to use FIP with ELL students.
3. Identify several tools to help you differentiate instruction and make assessment accommodations for ELL students.
4. Apply FIP and ELL strategies from this module to a classroom scenario and to your own classroom.

Formative Instructional Practices Reaching Gifted Students (2 hours)

This module deepens teachers' understanding of how to use formative instructional practices to meet the needs of gifted students and maximize their achievement and growth. This module is intended for classroom teachers interested in improving instruction for their gifted students as well as for gifted intervention specialists who may be beginning their FIP journey. It is meant to be used as a companion to the Foundations of Formative Instructional Practices and FIP in Action modules. This module is organized by the four core components of FIP (clear learning targets, collecting and documenting evidence of student learning, analyzing evidence and providing effective feedback, and student ownership of learning). Each segment describes the component's effective use with students who are gifted.

2. Understand how to use the four core components of FIP to advance the learning for gifted students.

Formative Instructional Practices Reaching Students with Disabilities (2 hours)

This module deepens teachers' understanding of how best to meet the needs of students with a range of special needs by using formative instructional practices (FIP) to maximize their achievement and growth. This module is intended for classroom teachers interested in improving instruction for their students with disabilities (SWD), as well as for intervention specialists who may be beginning their FIP journey. It is meant to be used as a companion to the Foundations of Formative Instructional Practices and FIP in Action modules. This module is organized by the four core components of FIP (clear learning targets, collecting and documenting evidence of student learning, analyzing evidence and providing effective feedback, and student ownership of learning). Each segment describes the component's effective use with students with disabilities.
