Course Overview

This course is designed to provide information on specific topics related to the special education process that goes beyond the information provided in the Special Education Essentials course. The modules in this course are developed around topics of interest to offer shorter, more detailed information about a specific topic. Some of the modules that you can find in this course are Least Restrictive Environment, Disproportionality in Special Education Achievement, Co-Plan to Serve, Parent Engagement and Individualized Education Program (IEP) Goal Construction.

Course Objectives
  • Understand the continuum of services for the Least Restrictive Environment and how to document the Least Restrictive Environment in an Individual Education Program.
  • Understand the legislative requirements for developing Academic Individual Education Program goals and how to construct goals in the Individual Education Program properly.
  • Understand the definition of disproportionality, what it is in Student Identification, Placement, and Discipline, and how it impacts schools.
  • Understand the foundation of co-plan to serve and how co-planning can help support the learning of all students by planning instructional content, instructional delivery, and assessment of student learning
  • Identify the importance of parent engagement throughout special education processes.
  • Define related services and how they are incorporated into the Evaluation Team Report and Individualized Education Program.
