Focused Mentoring for Resident Educators and Mentors

Program Overview

Focused Mentoring is a component of instructional mentoring aimed at developing specific skills and competencies to improve the instructional practices of resident educators. While mentoring overall addresses the instructional support resident educators need as they begin their professional teaching careers, focused mentoring is specific and targeted to address teacher competencies that Ohio once measured in the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA).


Focused Mentoring is delivered in two parts. Focused Mentoring 1 targets communication, collaboration and professional growth. Focused Mentoring 2 targets use of student formative and summative assessment in year 2. 

The program topics include: Focused Mentoring 1 and Focused Mentoring 2 . The courses may be taken by individual resident educators or facilitated by the mentor for a group of resident educators. Educators may choose to complete all courses in a program or parts of the program by choosing only the courses needed to address the individual needs of each resident educator.

This course guides the mentor in supporting the resident educator through the Communication module of the Focused Mentoring courses. By the end of the course, participants will engage in activities involving the following competencies: -Creating a clear, positive, and respectful message -Communicating with families about strengths and concerns for individual students

This course guides the mentor in supporting the resident educator through the Communication module of the Focused Mentoring courses. This module guides the mentor in supporting the resident educator through the designing assessments section of the Focused Mentoring courses. This module guides the mentor in supporting the resident educator through the providing feedback section of the Focused Mentoring courses.
